Wales

The Principality of Wales (Cymru) is bordered by England to the east and the Irish Sea and Atlantic Ocean to the west and south west.

Wales made their Commonwealth Games debut in Hamilton in 1930 and are one of only six nations to have taken part in every Games since that time.

Having made their debut in the inaugural Games with 3 medals it was the 1938 gathering in Sydney that brought its first gold, athletics and boxing providing the honours. The capital city of Cardiff hosted the Games in 1958 and the home gold medal hero was Howard Winstone who won the men's bantamweight division in the boxing ring.

At the 2006 Games in Melbourne Team Wales, captained by one of the world's leading paralympians, Dame Tani Grey-Thompson, enjoyed a haul of 19 medals.

Since Wales cannot compete at the Olympic Games as a separate nation, the Commonwealth Games provides the Principality with its only opportunity to compete in a major international multi-sport event. The Principality's participation in the Games is organised by the Commonwealth Games Council of Wales.
