Newfoundland

Newfoundland was a British ‘Dominion’ from 1907 to 1949. The Dominion of Newfoundland was situated in northeastern North America along the Atlantic coast and comprised the island of Newfoundland and Labrador on the continental mainland.

The dominion was self-governing from 1907 to 1934 and sent a team to the British Empire Games in 1930 and 1934.

After this time it voluntarily gave up self-government and reverted to direct control from London.

In 1949 Newfoundland became a province of Canada and its athletes have since been eligible to compete in the Commonwealth Games for Canada.
