The Republic of Sierra Leone (Portuguese for 'Lion Mountain') joined the Commonwealth in 1961. It is bordered by Guinea, Liberia and the Atlantic ocean in West Africa.
Sierra Leone made its debut in the Cardiff Games in 1958 and took part again in 1966, 1970 and 1978 before returning in 1990 in Auckland from where they have taken part ever since. In Glasgow 2014 they took part in eight sports.
The Sierra Leone National Olympic Committee was formally recognised in 1964 and is responsible for organising the country's participation in the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
